Avoid this brutal mistake when starting your online journey

The biggest mistake you should avoid when trying to earn your first online dollar.

Let me tell you a personal story.

In 2018 I moved to China to work as an English teacher. I loved living abroad, but the job didn’t suit me and the pay was fairly low.

I came across an online business course promising to teach how to position yourself as a consultant and make money online.

This course set me back about 2 months salary.

The crazy thing is, I didn’t even open it.

That’s right. I spent a ton of money on a business course and couldn’t even bring myself to start.

I saw the mountain of work ahead of me and took comfort in the fact that I had the course and would start it ‘one day’.

Why didn’t I start?

There were several factors at play, but one huge reason.

I had no drive.

I had no reason why.

Sure, I wanted more money and to swap teaching for an online business. But that was far too vague to overcome the huge resistance I had built up in my head.

Finding your WHY

When you embark on a new journey you need to have a clear destination and you need to have a damn good reason WHY you want to get there.

If you don’t have a compelling reason or motive to keep working, you will likely give up on the first sign of resistance.

What you aim at determines what you see. - Jordan Peterson

Your ‘why’ acts as your piercing light through the inevitable fog and distractions.

Don’t make the same mistake I did.

Make sure you set a solid foundation before you start building towards a goal you think you want.

Here’s a breakdown of how to find your why.

  • What are your core values, beliefs, and principles?

  • Visualize your ideal future (get specific on relationships, career, health, and personal development)

  • What are your main responsibilities to your family, employer, friends, and community?

  • Finally, write down what will happen if you don’t take action.

From this, craft a personal mission statement.

Keep it clear and as concise as possible. Ideally a few sentences at most.

Crafting a personal mission statement gives you a clear reason to pursue your goals that is deeply personal to you.

Now you have something that you can always reference, to remind yourself why you’re on this path and the consequences if you give up.
