Online income beginnings

This newsletter is for anyone who wants to have freedom of location, work for themselves and make their first online $$$.

I’ll start from the very beginning, giving you practical steps to take towards achieving the lifestyle you want. All based on the actions that I’m personally taking.

I want you to understand where I’m coming from and the struggles I’m taking on to reach my goals.

Maybe it’s somewhat relatable to you. So here’s a quick background on me. (Skip it if you want).

I come from an average family in a Scottish rural town. School was not a fun time for me.

Something about that system did not suit me at all. I barely managed to get into university - (Not that I wanted to go anyway).

After graduating with the lowest possible grade in mechanical engineering I saved up some money and went on a trip to Asia. From there I fell in love with travel and the lifestyle of living abroad in new exciting places.

I ended up working as a snowboard instructor in Japan, South Korea and at an indoor training facility in Hong Kong. Then I taught English in Taiwan and China.

I made a ton of mistakes in those years and wasted a lot of time.

Teaching English just wasn’t for me and snowboard instructing isn’t sustainable work. I started looking for ways to make money online to keep living abroad but this time - on my own terms.

That’s when I hit some recurring problems. Procrastination and self-doubt kept dragging me down.

I always let my mind talk me out of the thing I was supposed to do because it was uncomfortable or I doubted it’s success. I felt like I associated ‘work’ with all the bad times in school and university.

Now I’m at a crossroads.

Either I make an online income or I return home to Scotland and start at square one in a regular 9-5 job.

You can guess which one I want to avoid like the plague.

———————————————————————————————————-

So let’s dive into how I plan to make an online income. (There will be some ideas for you too)

There are a few ways to do this.

1. Remote jobs.

2. Freelancing work.

3. Build an audience on social media and sell a product/service.

4. Start your own agency or business.

The problems with applying to remote work positions.

  • They are in high demand with limited openings

  • You often have to reside in the country of your employer

  • Even if it’s a truly remote job, they often require you to work within their time zone.

All of these factors make it difficult (not impossible) to find a suitable position. I currently reside in Taiwan and the US or UK hours would have me working into the early hours of the morning.

Starting my own agency or business doesn’t align with what I want right now either.

So that leaves 2 options

  1. Work as a freelancer.

  2. Build an audience and sell a product or service.

I will aim toward both.

Building an audience takes time, but it seems to be a great way of finding work and valuable connections without directly applying for jobs.

Why?

Because you’re

- Showcasing your work
- Improving your writing skill
- Building a network of winners
- Increasing the chance of meeting the right work connection

It’s a no-brainer.

In the meantime, I’ll do direct outreach and try to find freelance work in the copywriting space.

Building an audience and doing direct outreach will maximize your chances of finding your first client.

If you’ve read this far you’re definitely interested in building an online income and creating location independence.

I’ll be sharing everything I learn, all the mistakes I make, and what works well in the coming weeks. I’m sure you’ll find some valuable insights here.

Also, I don’t want to stay in my own echo chamber, so don’t hesitate to reach out if you want to talk or share ideas.

Next week I’ll talk about the biggest mistake I made when first trying to build an online income and how you can set your foundations for success.

Thanks for reading. Until next time..
